Last week I was asked to become boom operator for a training video. The video was being produced for a high end clothes company called Reiss.
I spent the day in the store on Bond Street recording the talent they had brought in for the film. Where I have my own rifle mic, at the time didn’t have a boom pole so I spent most of the day rather unprofessionally pointing the mic at whoever was talking. Now however I have the technology to do things properly!
Still it was a good experience both dealing with actors, and also crew members of various traits. Hopefully it shall lead on to more work.
The last job I had for Communion Records (the week at Camden) was featured in last week’s NME which was exciting. I’ve been told I may get to work on the Post Production for that documentary, not only to hone my skills but also I get the chance to correct any mistakes I may have made during recording. I’m looking forward to the final piece!
I had a telephone call at the start of the week asking if I’d like to do the Post Production for a drama series. Hopefully I shall be hearing from that soon!
I find myself in Camden Town, a pub called The Flower Pot. I had a phone call whilst lounging on the farm requesting a sound operator.
A record label known as Communion Records is holding a week of folk based gigs and collaborations with about thirty bands. In addition to this they have hired a group of people to film a documentary.
So here I am armed with my new 816 and a range of other equipment, recording interviews with bands and capturing their sets.
It’s my first time properly handling microphones in a production situation so its a bit of a learning curb at times but all in all its good experience.
Plus one of the bands is Mumford and Sons.
This was a project for a Fashion Promotion student. She had decided to carry out a live/prerecorded performance to promote the work she had completed.
I was asked to record an actress she had found, speaking the poem: ‘The Road Not Taken’ by Robert Frost, 1920
The recording was to be played as a voice over whist a short film of the actress walking through a forest was played. The show went ahead and everything worked out fine.
The vocals were recorded using my Zoom H4N microphone.
I carried out voice treatment to clear some of the background noise from the room we recorded in, and added a wild track of typical woodland noises to blend with the film I at that stage hadn’t seen.
We went through several takes with the actress until the director was happy. Due to time constraints - the project had to be completed that day - the final result wasn’t too bad. I’m not too happy with the reverb but it was added by request of the director.
The whole point of this Tumblr is that I have an online portfolio of the Sound projects I get involved with, interspersed with any music or other activities I have created and the odd Classic Car that has caught my eye.
The next few updates are projects I carried out over the course of my first year at Ravensbourne. None of these projects I have carried out as part of my course these have all been dealings with other students.
I did get involved with a director for the BBC at the beginning of term. He was working on the Real Hustle and needed some sweeps and swooshing sounds for various camera transitions. I shall upload a few of the more successful ones here as well.
I am also working on an Audio Drama penned by Greg Upton and starring Jon Tebb and Hannah Nicholas. When this is complete it shall find its way on here too. I am particularly pleased with a couple of sounds I designed for it. They shall follow…
